March 11, 2012. In Matsushima, I encountered the sound of a ship’s whistle.

That whistle is sounded simultaneously from ships anchored in the harbor every year at 2:46 PM on March 11th, in memorial for those who suffered and lost their lives in the Great East Japan Earthquake.

This work, Listening to the Sound of Prayer, centers on the recording series Memorial Whistles 2012-2022, recorded over the ten years since that encounter in Matsushima. It also features a Suikinkutsu (water harp) crafted from Suzu-yaki pottery, a traditional craft from the Noto Peninsula destroyed by the disaster, along with the musical piece “3.10 String Accompaniment for a Whistle,” among other exhibited works. Together, they express prayers for the repose of the departed, for renewal, and for the future.

* The Soundscape Association of Japan Encouragement Award
* Performed at the FUJIFILM X CREATIVE CAMP III event
* Live guest appearance on HAB (Hokuriku Asahi Broadcasting)’s “Fumufumu”
